What Are the Multiples of 5?

The product of a whole number and an integer is called a multiple. The product of 5 and any integer is a multiple of 5. The first few multiples of 5 are 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and so on. We get successive multiples of 5 by skip counting.

*

If we skip count 108 times by 5, we will get the 108th multiple of 5, i.e., 108 × 5 = 540. We can also find the multiples of 5 using the multiplication table of 5.

Important Notes:

The smallest multiple of every number is the number itself, that is, 5 × 1 = 5.If a number is a multiple of 5, it will have its last digit as 0 or 5.A multiple is termed to be a common multiple if it is common for two or more numbers. Example: 5 × 2 = 10, 2 × 5 = 10; 10 is a common multiple of 5 and 2.The number of multiples for a given number is infinite.

Challenging Questions:

Nick visits California every 5 days and Charles visits the same place every 20 days. Suppose they both are together on the same day today, when will they next visit on the same day?Ryan wants to buy erasers and pencils. The store sells erasers in packs of 2 and pencils in packs of 5. If he wishes to buy the same number of erasers and pencils, what is the minimum number of erasers he can buy?

Multiples of 5 Solved Examples

Example 1: Andrea makes a couple of necklaces. She makes them in such a way that there are 5 beads in the first necklace, 10 in the second, 15 in the third, and so on. How many beads would she need to make the 40th necklace?

Solution:

In the 4th necklace, Andrea needs 4 × 5 = 20 beads.In the 8th necklace, she needs 8 × 5 = 40 beads.Hence, for the nth necklace, she would need n × 5 beads.Thus, for the 40th necklace, she would need 40 × 5 = 200 beads.

Example 2: John is playing a video game. For every jump over an obstacle, he collects 5 coins. He wants to know how many coins he would have collected if he crossed 120 such jumps. Can you help him calculate the score?

Solution:

John gets 5 coins for every jump. In 120 jumps, he would have collected 120 × 5 = 600 coins.Thus, he will have 600 coins after 120 jumps.
